Ranking every 2023 Kentucky Derby horse by the silks their jockeys will wear

Picking a Kentucky Derby winner isn't easy.

Sure, you've got your odds to look at. But for those of us -- hi, it's me -- who are casual bettors, maybe our ranking of every horse name isn't enough.

So I've decided to try another approach: Picking by color.

It's a "strategy" used by casual bettors in March Madness brackets, so why not try it here? So we're looking at all the jockey silks and ranking them from "ugh, no, they're an eyesore!" to "Ooo, that looks like what a winner would wear!"

Here's the full look at all 20 jockeys' silks, which we'll rank below:

20. Verifying

Too plain. There needs to be some pizazz with these?

19. Mage

A little less plain but still too plain.

18. Reincarnate

A slight improvement with the stripe.

17. Kingsbarns

Ugh, no.

Charlie Brown called, he wants his shirt back.

15. Hit Show

I don't love that shade of pink/red.

14. Disarm

I like ones with logos but still too plain.

13. Tapit Trice

A bit of an eyesore but I somehow think it's decent!

12. Lord Miles

If you asked me to pick out what a standard silk design would look like, this would be it. That doesn't mean it's bad, but there are better.

11. Raise Cain

We're getting closer.

10. Angel of Empire

It's nice but ...

I actually like this one a lot despite initially not!

6. Confidence Game

These are so clean.

5. Two Phil's

It looks like a uniform you'd see in another sport, which is why it's doubly intimidating for other jockeys ... maybe.

I also love these.

3. Practical Move

Too orange? Too plain? I don't think so. It's got that quirky logo, the stripes on the sleeves ... I think there's pizazz here.

We're almost there. This one is gorgeous.
